Every operation is carefully planned to achieve the safest cancer treatment while preserving appearance whenever possible.
PROCEDURES-
A lumpectomy removes the breast cancer along with a rim of surrounding healthy tissue (called a margin) while preserving the majority of the breast. For many women with early-stage breast cancer, a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy provides outcomes equivalent to mastectomy while maintaining the natural appearance of the breast and preserving breast tissue.
The procedure is typically performed as outpatient surgery, allowing patients to return home the same day. Most women experience a relatively quick recovery and are able to resume many normal activities within several days.
Whenever possible, surgical planning takes cosmetic outcome into consideration to preserve breast shape and symmetry.

A mastectomy removes the breast tissue to treat or prevent breast cancer. Depending on the diagnosis and individual circumstances, several types of mastectomy may be appropriate.
Treatment recommendations are individualized based on cancer characteristics, breast size, genetic risk, previous treatments, and each patient's personal goals.
For many patients, immediate breast reconstruction can be performed in coordination with a plastic surgeon.

A nipple-sparing mastectomy removes the breast tissue while preserving the skin envelope and nipple-areolar complex when it is safe from an oncologic standpoint.
Not every patient is a candidate for this approach, but for appropriately selected individuals it can provide excellent cosmetic outcomes while maintaining cancer safety.
Candidacy depends on factors including tumor location, breast anatomy, previous surgeries, smoking history, and overall health.

During a skin-sparing mastectomy, nearly all of the breast skin is preserved while the breast tissue and nipple are removed.
This approach allows for improved cosmetic reconstruction and is commonly performed when immediate reconstruction is planned.
Your surgeon will work closely with your reconstructive surgeon to determine the most appropriate surgical plan.

The lymph nodes beneath the arm help determine whether breast cancer has spread beyond the breast and stage the breast cancer.
A sentinel lymph node biopsy identifies and removes the first one to a few additional lymph nodes that drain the breast. If these nodes are free or limited to 2 or less involved with cancer, additional lymph node surgery is often unnecessary.
Compared with older surgical approaches, sentinel node biopsy significantly reduces the risk of arm swelling (lymphedema), numbness, and shoulder stiffness while still providing important staging information to appropriately guide adjuvant therapy recommendations.

If breast cancer has spread to multiple lymph nodes, additional lymph node surgery may sometimes be recommended.
Advances in breast cancer treatment mean that many patients who previously required complete lymph node removal can now safely avoid more extensive surgery. When additional surgery is necessary, treatment recommendations are based on current evidence and national guidelines to balance cancer control with minimizing side effects.

An excisional biopsy removes an area of abnormal breast tissue that cannot be adequately evaluated with a needle biopsy alone or requires complete surgical removal.
This procedure is commonly recommended for certain high-risk lesions, discordant biopsy results, or abnormalities identified on imaging.
The goal is to obtain a definitive diagnosis while minimizing changes to the appearance of the breast whenever possible.

Many breast abnormalities cannot be felt during a physical examination but can be accurately identified using mammography, ultrasound, or MRI.
Before surgery, a tiny localization device is placed by a breast radiologist to precisely identify the area requiring removal. This allows the surgeon to remove the targeted tissue while preserving as much normal breast tissue as possible.

Oncoplastic surgery combines breast cancer surgery with plastic surgery techniques to optimize both cancer treatment and cosmetic outcomes.
For selected patients, reshaping the breast during lumpectomy can improve symmetry, preserve breast contour, and reduce visible deformity after surgery.
If additional procedures on the opposite breast may improve balance and symmetry, these options can be discussed during treatment planning.

Breast reconstruction is a personal choice and is not required after mastectomy.
For patients interested in reconstruction, we work closely with experienced plastic surgeons to coordinate care and discuss the options that best align with your goals. Reconstruction may be performed at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction).
Our role is to ensure you understand all available options so you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.
